Work

ValerieMy first poetry collection for adults, Touch Mi! Tell Mi! was published by Bogle-L’Ouverture in 1983, and a children’s collection, Duppy Jamboree, followed through Cambridge University Press in 1992. Since then I’ve worked on various poetry books and anthologies, as well as contributing to projects and collections edited by colleagues. My first children’s novel, Surprising Joy, deals with the story of a young girl coming from the Caribbean to live in England for the first time, while The Tribe follows Maruka, a Taino girl living in the islands at the time of the first European contact. That one took a lot of research!
